Abhyanga is a massage technique, soft and rhythmic, from Ayurvedic Medicine. This therapeutic practice promotes physical, mental and emotional relaxation, as well as promoting better blood and lymphatic system circulation, provides the strengthening of the immune system, enables the relief of muscle pain and tension, boosts gastrointestinal function and helps in skin nutrition and hair.
It is also indicated to treat anxiety, helps with rheumatism, tiredness, libido deficiency, depression, phobias, insomnia, irritability, labyrinthitis, reduction of edema and swelling, panic syndrome, treatment of headaches and migraines and other neurological disorders .
Abhyanga is a Sanskrit word that means, oiling and Shirodhara, also from Sanskrit, which means continuous flow in the head. Shiro, means head and dhara, continuous flow. The effects of abhyanga are enhanced due to the association with Shirodhara. The constant flow of the vehicle (oil, milk or a special preparation) over the head, produces circular waves that generate cerebral calm and nourish the energy channels.
Duration: Each session lasts around 2 hours.
Procedure: Initially the hair is combed and then the patient is subjected to a generous amount of heated vegetable oil and medicated especially according to the individual treatment protocol. The body massage is performed, afterwards the patient receives the treatment of continuous flow of heated oil in the head and the treatment is ended with the body heating.
